Artist statement
I reconstruct spaces and figures within my memory and imagination through the use of materials such as plaster, resin, and reclaimed wood. In the process of dismantling, abstracting, and reproducing both urban structures and human figures from my everyday world, my artistic aim lies in capturing the dynamic ecosystem of energy existing between people and their surrounding spaces. In my body of work, notions of pictorial representation and abstraction are challenged, as I utilize combinations of color, form, and texture to generate a dialogue concerning the relationship between figure and space. My constructive process often begins with the collection of found wood fragments from varying locations, each consisting of a different color, shape, and grain. The unique nature of each wooden scrap reflects the rich diversity of individuals critical to inspiring my creative process. By meticulously situating these singular pieces alongside one another, I am able to recontextualize them into a perspectival landscape, imbuing a sense of purpose and residence to the previously wandering wood. Woodblock printmaking and casting, two processes integral to my artistic practice, also help to solidify an identity for my materials, as I reproduce imprints of wooden surfaces and create permanent casts of my wood scraps in resin and plaster
