nd Osaka, and has steadily established himself as an artist attracting attention from art critics and collectors at Volta Shaw Basel, Art Paris, Vienna Art Fair, and Art Stage Singapore.

As written in the preface of <the Shape of Sword, the Rule of Sword>, Choi Jeong Yun’s 4th personal show catalogue by art critic Mr. Ahn, In Ghee: “his works, made of ceramic, signify the hunt for swords’ origin related to more fundamental and productive function rather than their destructive one of Carl von Clausewitz”, Choi Jeong Yun has been dealing with the sword as a medium to observe the origin and nature of civilizations.
If it had been the nature of previous works to see through the accumulations of historical origin of sword during the process of world civilizations by that representing the totemic illusion of bronze sword revoking the mythic structure of power, sorcery, protection and retaliation and wise depriving of the strong symbolic system through the soft matters like clay, now the sword of salt is to focus the metaphoric nature as a practical sphere of realistic sense for that historical origin of his lasting concerns to invite this world.
The salt as essential need to maintain human life has been symbolized as the power, wealth, purification, resistance, life and the untainted mind in civilizations and religions. It is an allegory of historical creations and demises of civilizations as well as of the artist’s act to contact and expand to the world of now in the way of physical sense like the taste.
Though the sharp vertical shape is still reminding us of the manly ritual symbol toward the power, it also combines with the fragile texture of salt which leaves only the sensual signifier by the crystalized pure white to the eye of viewers with sliding and scattering combination of rigid traditional meanings. Thus the signifier of paradoxical collision reveals itself not as the completion of taxidermy to represent sword by powdering, carving or casting of salt but as a changing possibility of the flesh of the artist. The artist’s body as a sensitive and present living creature communicate with the world through the ancient form, when the secret of old civilization and human history are freshly summoned through our senses.
