Brillo as a Myth
About Issues of Image and Representation
I have been questioning what image is that represent by only painting within diverse contemporary art since the first time I made art works. Especially the <Myth of our time> series which featuring detailed working process make multi-layered paints to flat and smooth surface use delicate brush stroke. I would try to find the essential properties of figurative image through the floating object on the seascape looks like in a vacuum space in these serial paintings. In addition, on more significance characteristic of my painting is the concept of ‘myth,’ I would give admire the beauty of ephemeral image of all ordinary visual culture under the titled of ‘myth,’ so all my painting is a message by itself. In other words, my art works include the fragment of our epic that sometimes different but chemistry each other.
My recent art works <Fragment of the time-Image of Myth>, I turned to emphasize the conceptual part of my painting than drawing skills, but I still considering about the issues of image and representation in contemporary art. It is related with the problem about ‘after the end of art,’ in this sense I would try to discover the possibility of painting in new era. As I call it ‘my myth’ is a communication tool for sharing emotions in our time, that is, I would like to suggest my recent works are a monologue to saying about what is myth today. ‘My myth’ is telling about the precious value, homage to the ghost of art history, and the power of image of painting.
I as an artist of today, I think my painting is an inquiry of image and representation in contemporary art, and finally I would like to show novelty and message in my version of Brillo. If anyone asking why, my answer is; for me Brillo is a kind of epic as myth as I paint it with my own story surrounding our every life. As a magic box or a gift box, my ‘painting’ will give you pleasurable impression and sensational question.
