Artist Note _ _SOHN SEO HYUN
My work has now become a source of comfort and meditation for my life. While working, I unfold and refine my inherent emotions, receive comfort, and return to my daily life. What makes me peaceful is living. By drawing a garden made by gathering all the floating things in my mind, I hope to free my mind and find a peaceful inner space.
Just like gardening, I discipline myself in the process of creating and building up my work. Create a color as if you were selecting the ground and paint the background color on the canvas. Just like planting a seedling, draw the plants that come to mind moment by moment with a pen. Arrange the plants in a balanced manner. And layers of color give it life.
The ‘Hanging Garden’ series and the ‘gardening’ series, which I have been drawing in this way since 2012, began with the need for a space where one can think while providing comfort to the mind. The ‘Emerald Heart’ series from 2015 to 2016 was a process of straightening one’s self by comparing it to a plant pillar in response to changes in roles at different stages of life (marriage, pregnancy, etc.). From the 2019 ‘Hanging Garden’ series, space was added to the combination of plants, and in the ‘Silentscape (2020-)’ series, space with perspective and blank space was expressed as a relief for the frustration caused by the coronavirus pandemic situation. In Silentscape #9, a pine tree seen outside the window every day after moving appeared, and in Silentscape #10 and 11, a cedar forest encountered during a trip to Jeju Island appeared. Although this is a space I draw from my imagination, moments I encounter in reality also cross over into my virtual space.
I enjoy the pleasure of drawing tranquil landscapes that are not shaken by external circumstances and traveling through them. Therefore, my work represents a psychological landscape.
Su-Hyeon Park (Art Studies, Art Criticism)
Seohyun Son's paintings explore the space in the mind where one can think. This place, called ‘Hanging Garden’, ‘Oasis’, ‘Landscape of Tranquility’, etc., is the author’s own sanctuary after leaving the real world of humans. The artist creates a peaceful inner space by unfolding and refining emotions by relying on the appearance of plants. An unknown space reminiscent of a forest. Here, multiple horizons and heterogeneous spaces intersect, and plants turn over and float. It is closer to a virtual space than a natural space in that it does not follow the laws of nature. Virtual space is a space that transcends reality and is outside of history and institutions. It is an infinite world free from external forces that limit human life and the limitations of the body and consciousness.
