Author NOTE __ Lee, Suk Joon
“Make the Great Greater.” This slogan is no longer confined to the political campaign of a particular nation.
It has become deeply embedded in the production of images in the age of digital media
and generative AI, shaping the perceptions and ways of thinking of
those who live within it. Rather than recording reality as it is,
people reconstruct themselves and the world through images that are more beautiful,
more dramatic, and more convincing. Through appropriation, manipulation, compositing, and generation,
they create fabricated subjects that have never existed, gradually perceiving
these images as real or embracing them as new objects of thought and desire.
My practice began with sculpture and has gradually expanded into digital and new media,
responding to emerging materials and changing modes of perception.
Within this contemporary environment, I question the act of image-making
and the ways in which artistic images acquire meaning,
authority, and belief. I reconfigure political, social,
and religious imagery, along with representations of the digital age,
through physical forms such as neon signs, posters, pedestals,
and sculptures that appropriate the visual language of public monuments.
Through these works, I examine the beliefs and desires produced by images,
as well as the ways in which we perceive, accept, and use them.
In an era when everyone has become a Player—no longer merely observing images,
but actively selecting, manipulating, editing, staging,
and circulating them—my work participates in this process while making unfamiliar
the moments in which images generate belief and desire and begin to operate as reality.
