Artist statement _ My City Subtopia
Subtopia, signifies a world situated in the middle ground, neither Utopia nor Dystopia.
I consider the world of today to be a Subtopia.
We have lost the Utopia that humanity imagined and dreamed of in the past.Contrary to its sturdy exterior,
this space, built of lightweight paper, is a concrete and familiar environment where the old and worn—
and all values that once existed as foundations—are covered up by the same ideologies, desires, and architecture
Here, one cannot find traces of human presence, the symbols that constitute a city, landmarks, or the devices
and elements that connect them. This repetitive and familiar space, devoid of any secrets, strangeness, or riddles,
exists as an "abstract space" that holds no meaning beyond the strangeness of the outside world.
Nevertheless, the reason we perceive Subtopia not as "Dead Spaces" but as "Vitalized Spaces"—that is,
as the world we live in—is due to the numerous windows uniformly
arranged across the front of each block that makes up Subtopia.
Through these windows, we attempt to infer traces of people and the city here, but we soon lose our way.
Just as Gottfried W. Leibniz said, "There are no windows in a monad,"
these windows, tightly sealed without communication,
seem unlikely to ever open, and no entrance can be found anywhere in the blocks.
The closed structures of the windows and the square blocks paradoxically symbolize individuals isolated
within a city unable to dream or form relationships.
They reveal a closed space that combines seamlessly to the extreme,
blocking off any possibility of connection. However, just as everything related to human life is lost,
this current subtopia will also eventually be lost. As the impregnable surface gradually cracks, fades, is covered,
crumbles, and erodes, it will eventually become a ruin and be lost, just as everything else does.
And this ruin will not be the end, but will enable reconstruction and find an escape route to the next world.
I view this process as drifting in search of an exit in a world of Subtopia—a point in between,
neither Utopia nor Dystopia. My work, *Subtopia*, embodies these thoughts and the aspects of this process.
