Jinsuh Jung
Jinsuh Jung graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University, where he also completed his master’s degree. Moving fluidly between sculpture and painting, he became deeply fascinated by the inherent purity and materiality of his media. This fascination led him to focus on encaustic painting, working primarily with beeswax.
By combining beeswax with damar resin and pigments, Jung creates his own medium and builds up his surfaces through a repetitive process of layering and carving on panels. Beeswax, a natural material extracted by melting and refining honeycombs, has been used in painting since the 5th–4th centuries BC in ancient Greece.
Through the unfamiliar yet captivating texture of encaustic painting, Jung explores the undefined and evolving nature of imagery—much like the process of life itself. His works invite viewers to experience the quiet accumulation of material and time embedded within each surface.
