Artist NOTE _Jung, Jae-chul
-MIDDLE GROUND- Compromise is necessary after confrontation and conflict. Initially, I focused on individuals in my work, choosing people within contradictory situations or those around me. I depicted the expressions of people within human relationships through my unique perspective and interpretation. However, I have now shifted to addressing the anxiety caused by conflict and violence and the need for compromise, excluding the forms and expressions of individuals in various situations.
As humans grow, they maintain social relationships through family, societal education, and interpersonal connections. Everyone can reflect on their roles in daily life, thus interacting with their surrounding world. However, as the intersection between personal needs and social demands widens, conflict and confrontation arise. The conflicts within communities, such as companies or nations, composed of individuals, are larger than imagined, and finding solutions is even more challenging. Ultimately, the prerequisite for compromise is ‘concession.’
Though I plan my paintings before, they never turn out exactly as planned. Variables always arise when considering the area of brush strokes, the harmony of colors, and material properties, leading to countless instances of painting and erasing. Throughout the process, I express strong emotions in the moment and occasionally make significant concessions. At some point, I reach the ideal composition that reflects the emotions I experienced during the creative process. My work is a testament to countless compromises!
In Jung Jaechul’s ‘MIDDLE GROUND’ series, the materialized thought represents the continuous contemplation of the artist's domain rather than the act of expression itself. This approach secures the freedom of expression and the viewer's engagement with the work.
Jung Jaechul’s deep and enjoyable abstraction, transitioning from action to thought, is warm and expressive. This creates an expectation that his abstract works, while seemingly trivial in the context of modern life, might still convey important stories about our existence. (Critic. Yim Daishik)
