Artist statement
I explore the tension that arises between the materiality of sculpture and the illusion of painting through the medium of photography. Everyday objects and spaces are placed in mise-en-scène borrowed from classical painting, and pictorial abbreviations, colors, and details are actively used to reconstruct them into photographs. Through this process, photography goes beyond simple records and acts as a stage where a sensory transformation between sculpture and painting, reality and image takes place.
My cultural experience resulted from this work. Growing up in Korea, I encountered classical Western images mainly through image data, and while studying in London for the first time, I became aware of the gap between images and reality, and the structure of repetitive similarities as I faced the real space and scenery. That experience led to a continuous search for the visual environment I see and the way images work in reality, and it still serves as a key motive for my work.
The "A Still Life Painting in My Storage" series, produced in 2006, is an important starting point in my 20-year working world. With the door of a small warehouse in a corner of Goldsmiths College Studios as a frame, the interior was painted and then photographed again to create a picture-like landscape. At that time, I graduated with the Warden's Art Purchase Prize for continuously developing this type of work. Since then, I have been traveling between Seoul, Europe, and the United States, forming my own visual mise-en-scène at the point where different time, space, and visual cultures intersect.
