Artist statement
My theatrical sculptures examine mental phenomena, illuminating the fluid nature of human consciousness and self-awareness in contrast to the material world. I handcraft three-dimensional objects out of paper and colored pencil, capturing the work-in-progress scenes of home improvement projects(recent works 2021-ongoing).
The work highlights the physicality of the material world, featuring life-size measuring tools, paint drops or stains on meticulously depicted wood grains, and tactile objects such as wall scrapers and sandpaper, all within a fictional space.
The trompe-l'œil effect of these meticulously rendered objects contributes to an illusory quality, creating a sense of both presence and absence. These arrangements of objects reflect the trajectories of an unseen inhabitant working and building the habitat in the present continuous tense, yet simultaneously withdraw from the viewer’s standpoint. Exploring the relationship between fictional space and audience, who constantly oscillates between first-person and third-person perspectives, I attempt to measure the distance between body and mind. Through introspection, I carve out mental space to cope with the uncertainty and bewilderment confronted in the unscripted, open-ended, and material-driven world.
Through these constructed spaces, I seek to externalize the internal landscape of consciousness, offering viewers a tangible reflection of the intangible processes of the mind.
