Everyone has their own personas.
People are assimilated into society, to become a part of it. To fit in, we often suppress our desires, thoughts, and aspirations behind a fitting persona. My work shows the liminality between these suppressed aspects and our outward persona.
While living abroad as a diaspora, I endeavored to erase my own identity and mimic the behaviors of the locals in order to assimilate into their society. Paradoxically, these efforts to erase myself only highlighted diasporic identity, rather than making me one of them. To assimilate into them, admit myself as a diaspora, striving to find my authentic self.
To release from the constraints of persona, I used automatism. I allowed my fleeting thoughts to flow without restraint, revealing buried images suppressed by society - unveiling desires, cravings, and longings stifled by societal norms. Through this process, I could release the suppressed thoughts, granting me to objectively view on myself and helping me discover my true identity.
My artwork encapsulates these liminal facets, layered within vibrant, abstract images adorned with stacked words, embodying our suppressed inner thoughts and facets. Despite using Western techniques and forms, upon closer inspection, Korean materials and elements are incorporated. This juxtaposition conveys the liminality between persona and abyss, highlighting the disparity between the society and thyself.
Similar to my attempt to erase my diasporic background, we perpetually mask our true selves to conform to societal norms. The "brainsketch" series exposes our liminality and inner depths, enabling viewers to engage with their suppressed aspects. Embracing ourselves as thyself leads to self-discovery and liberation from persona.
We are perpetually adrift from our personas. Finding thyself, It’s “brainsketch” series.
