Minjung Lee
Minjung Lee is a South Korean artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She earned her BFA in sculpture from Seoul National University and her MFA in sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art, London. She creates theatrical trompe l'oeil sculptures, densely hand-drawn in colored pencil on shaped multi-ply board, that examine the blurred boundary between the physical world and the realm of the mind, where narrative levels intersect and sometimes dissolve into one another. Using the realistically rendered surfaces of everyday objects as a sculptural medium in itself, and informed by her experience as a foreigner, artist and mother, her work makes visible a sense of marginal alienation from the comfort of home, rendered through countless layered pencil strokes that bear witness to time spent in that liminal space. Her work has been exhibited at Brooklyn Art Cluster (New York), Alternative Space Noon (Suwon) and Ortega y Gasset Projects (Brooklyn).
