Kimi Jaak (b. 1976, Korea) views everyday life through the eyes of a stranger, reflecting on how familiar experiences can evoke unease from an outsider's perspective. Stepping back from daily reality, she renders overlooked aspects of life through contrasting colors, flattened perspective and surreal compositions, distilling objects down to their essential form and raw sensation rather than realistic depiction. Much of her work draws on her visual experience of living in Hawaii since 2012, juxtaposing bright sunlight with interior shadows. Her 'Life Is A Circus' series wittily likens everyday moments to a circus to capture the varied emotions and experiences of modern life, while the recurring figure of 'John Doe', an anonymous everyman, symbolizes the compromises and disguises people adopt to navigate the world. She has exhibited widely in Korean galleries and at international venues including Art Ground London at the Saatchi Gallery and the LA Art Show.
