Sohn Seo Hyun
Seohyun Son's paintings explore the space in the mind where one can think. This place, called the Hanging Garden, Oasis, and Scenery of Tranquility, is the artist's own sanctuary after leaving the real world of humans. The artist creates a peaceful inner space by unfolding and refining emotions by leaning on the shapes of plants. In this unknown space reminiscent of a forest, multiple horizons and heterogeneous spaces intersect, and plants turn over and float. It is closer to a virtual space than a natural space in that it does not follow the laws of nature. Virtual space is a space that transcends reality and is beyond history and institutions. It is an infinite world free from the external forces that limit human life and the limitations of the body and consciousness.
Plants overlap and intertwine with each other, and sometimes are not clearly distinguished. This image makes us think of the human body and mind, where self and other are clearly distinguished, my space and your space are separated, and the distance from others who have become distant. The scene where numerous entities coexist and press against one another reminds us of a time when we leaned together and lived in harmony.
